Overview

You fly from Zanzibar to the Serengeti and spend a first afternoon on game drive. The second day is a full-day safari with a sunrise start. On the third day you drive to the Ngorongoro highlands, and on day four you descend into the crater before the return to Arusha and the flight to Zanzibar.

Three nights on safari mean the pace is comfortable and the chance of good sightings is higher.

Best Time to Visit Serengeti & Ngorongoro

June to October is the dry season and the easiest time for big-game viewing in the Serengeti. January and February are good for calving in the south. Tell us your dates and we will guide you on what to expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a four-day fly-in safari with three overnights — two full days on the Serengeti plains followed by a descent into the Ngorongoro Crater. You fly from Zanzibar into the Serengeti and out from Arusha, with return flights, all accommodation, every meal, park and crater fees, a 4x4 and a professional guide included.
The extra day buys you a second full day and night in the Serengeti. That means more time with the big cats, a better chance of finding the migration, and a more relaxed pace before the crater — rather than the quicker in-and-out of the three-day version. If time is tight, the 3-day covers the same two areas in one Serengeti night.
Three nights in total: two nights at a camp in the Serengeti (days one and two) and one night at a lodge on the Ngorongoro highlands (day three), positioning you for an early crater descent on the final morning. All on a full-board basis.
It depends on when you travel. The herds circle the ecosystem all year — calving on the southern plains around January–February, river crossings in the north around July–October. Two days in the Serengeti give you a better shot at intercepting them than a single day, and the resident lions, leopards and cheetahs are superb regardless. Mosum can advise on likely locations for your dates.
Between the two areas you have an excellent chance at all of the Big Five. The Serengeti delivers lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard across the plains, while the Ngorongoro floor is the region's best spot for the endangered black rhino. Add cheetah, giraffe, hippo, and vast herds of zebra and wildebeest. Sightings are never guaranteed, but four days stacks the odds in your favour.
You fly out from Zanzibar to Seronera Airstrip in the Serengeti (sometimes via a brief stop in Arusha), landing around late morning. Because the safari finishes at the crater, the return flight is from Arusha back to Zanzibar on day four. Your guide takes care of every transfer in between; exact routing is confirmed at booking.
The rate covers flights (Zanzibar–Serengeti out, Arusha–Zanzibar back), three nights' accommodation, all meals, every game drive in a 4x4, all Serengeti park fees and Ngorongoro crater fees, a professional driver-guide, and airport transfers. Personal spending, drinks, tips and travel insurance are not included.
No. Zanzibar and the mainland are both part of Tanzania, so if you're already on the island you do not need a separate visa for the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. Just make sure your existing Tanzania visa remains valid for the full length of the trip.
The Tanzania legs use light safari aircraft with small cabins and grand low-level views. Luggage is strictly capped — usually around 15 kg of soft-sided bags per person, no hard cases — so pack light for the three nights and check the exact allowance when you book.
Very much so — the longer, gentler pace makes it one of the better family safaris for children roughly aged six and up, with plenty of downtime at camp between drives. A few camps set minimum ages, so check with Mosum for family rooms and any policies before you book.
Travel light and soft-sided, and layer up for the highlands:
  • Breathable clothing in neutral tones (khaki, beige, olive)
  • Warm layers — the Ngorongoro rim is genuinely cold at dawn and dusk
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a wide-brim hat
  • Camera with a zoom lens, plus binoculars
  • Toiletries for three nights, personal medications and a valid photo ID
Safety comes first. If bad weather disrupts the domestic flights, Mosum will contact you as early as possible and work to adjust or rebook the safari. Confirm the cancellation and rebooking terms when you book, and leave a comfortable buffer before any international departure from Zanzibar.
Both areas are rewarding all year, with the crater dependable in every season. June to October offers the strongest all-round game viewing, and January–February pairs a dry spell with the southern calving. November–December is green and quiet; the long rains of March–May are the lowest season and the most likely to affect flights. For migration timing, plan your dates with Mosum.
