Short answer: about two quiet hours on a wooden sailboat, with snacks, drinks and music, timed to the sunset.
A sunset dhow cruise is simple, and that is why it works. Here is how the evening usually goes.
Before you board
We collect you in the late afternoon and drive to Nungwi, one of the best places on the island to watch the sun set over the sea. The exact time depends on the sunset and on your hotel.
On the water
The dhow is a traditional wooden sailboat. The crew raise the sail, serve drinks and local snacks and play Swahili music. Many guests spend the time simply watching the sky.
The sunset itself
The sun is lowest over the water around 6 PM through most of the year, with a wide band of orange, pink and gold. Photos are best in the half hour before and after.
Practical tips
- Bring a light jacket; the breeze can be cool.
- Wear flat shoes and avoid heavy bags.
- Sit on the west side of the boat for the best view.
- Tell us about allergies when you book.
Who it suits
Couples, friends and families with children who can stay seated. If you want something more active, combine it with swimming with turtles earlier in the day.
Details and booking are on the sunset dhow cruise page.
