Snorkeler swimming above a colourful coral reef at Mnemba Atoll

Mnemba Snorkeling: How the Morning Goes From Pickup to Reef

Short answer: an early pickup, a short boat ride, two or three reef stops and a relaxed return, usually within half a day.

If you are booked on a Mnemba trip and wonder what to expect, here is the morning in order.

Pickup and briefing

We collect you from your hotel early. At the departure beach, you try on a mask and fins and hear the safety briefing. Life jackets are fitted.

The crossing

The boat crosses open water to the atoll. The sea is usually calmest in the morning.

In the water

Your guide enters first and leads the group along the reef. You can float and watch, or dive down for a closer look. Expect parrotfish, angelfish and other reef fish, and, with luck, a turtle.

Between swims

Rest on the boat with fruit and cold drinks while the captain moves to the next spot.

Tips for first-timers

  • Practise breathing through the snorkel in shallow water first.
  • Defog your mask with a little spit or a drop of baby shampoo.
  • Do not touch the coral or the animals.
  • Tell the guide if you feel tired; there is no rush.
