Traditional dhow with a white sail near Mnemba Island, Zanzibar

Mnemba Island From Nungwi: Journey, Timing and Tips

Short answer: you can reach Mnemba from Nungwi, but the crossing is longer than from Matemwe, so plan for an early start and a full morning.

Nungwi sits at the northern tip of Zanzibar, and many visitors stay there. Mnemba lies off the north-east coast, so the plan differs from the shorter crossing from Matemwe.

How the day works

We collect you from your hotel in the morning and arrange the route to the departure point that gives you the best sea conditions. We confirm the exact departure point and time the day before, because it depends on tide and wind.

How long it takes

Expect a longer total morning than from Matemwe because of the extra transfer or boat time. The trip is usually back by early afternoon.

Combine it with Nungwi

Many guests add a swim with turtles at Nungwi in the afternoon, or end the day with a sunset dhow cruise. See the turtle swim.

Tips

  • Book a few days ahead in peak season.
  • Wear swimwear under your clothes.
  • Bring sunscreen and a waterproof bag.
  • Eat a light breakfast.
