Stone Town Walking Tour: Old Streets, Markets & Swahili History with a Local Guide
Stone Town is easy to get lost in and hard to forget. On this guided walk we take you through the lanes of the old city, explain what you are looking at and show you the corners that map apps miss.
Mosum Tours & Safaris is based on Forodhani Street, in the heart of the old town, so this is our own neighbourhood and not just a tour route.

Overview
The walk covers the historic core of the UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Old Fort, the House of Wonders, the Old Dispensary, the market streets of Darajani and the sites that tell the story of the slave trade and its abolition. Along the way your guide points out carved Zanzibari doors, mosques, temples and churches standing side by side.
The pace is relaxed and the route is flat, with plenty of stops for photos, questions and a cool drink. The tour is private or small-group, and we can adjust the stops to your interests, such as architecture, food, photography or history.
You can end at Forodhani Gardens for sunset snacks, or continue straight to a spice farm or a boat trip, as Stone Town fits well into a combined day.
Mosum Tours & Safaris is a Zanzibar-based operator with more than ten years of experience in ground handling. Our guides and drivers live on the island, know it well and are on WhatsApp from 8 AM to 9 PM every day.

Best Time to Visit Stone Town
This experience runs all year. The dry months, June to October and December to February, are the most comfortable for being outdoors. When it rains the paths can be muddy, so wear shoes with grip and bring a light rain jacket.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the walk?
Plan on two to three hours at a relaxed pace. We can make it shorter or longer depending on your interests.
Is it physically demanding?
No. The streets are flat but uneven in places, so comfortable shoes are important. It suits most ages and fitness levels.
What should I wear?
Light, modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is respectful in this largely Muslim city. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water.
Can we go inside the House of Wonders?
The building’s interior has been closed for restoration at times, so access can change. Your guide will tell you what is open on the day.
Is the Old Slave Market suitable for children?
The site is sober and the history is difficult. Parents can decide what is right for their children, and the guide adapts the explanation.
Can I take photographs?
Yes, in most places. Please ask before photographing people, and avoid taking pictures inside places of worship unless it is clearly allowed.
Can I combine Stone Town with another tour?
Yes. It combines well with a spice farm, Prison Island or a sunset cruise. Ask us and we will build the day.
