Best Time to Visit Tarangire & Ngorongoro

Tarangire is best from June to October, when the elephants gather along the Tarangire River. Ngorongoro is good all year. In the wet season Tarangire is green and quieter.

Excellent — dry season, elephants & plains game at their best
Good — green & scenic, fewer crowds
Moderate — long rains, lush but wildlife disperses

Northern-circuit lodges and the light-aircraft seats are in high demand in peak season (June–October), so booking a few weeks ahead is the best way to secure both your date and preferred lodge near the crater.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a two-day fly-in safari with one overnight that pairs two northern Tanzania icons: Tarangire National Park on day one and the Ngorongoro Crater on day two. You fly from Zanzibar to Arusha, game-drive both parks, and fly home the second evening. Return flights, accommodation, all meals, park and crater fees, a 4x4 and a professional guide are included.
Tarangire is famous for its enormous elephant herds — among the largest concentrations in Tanzania — and its landscape of ancient baobab trees along the Tarangire River. You can also expect lion, giraffe, zebra, and a huge variety of birds, with the dry season drawing thousands of animals to the water.
It's the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — a vast, walled amphitheatre often called the "Eighth Wonder of the World" and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its floor holds one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa: lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, flamingos on the soda lake, and a resident population of the endangered black rhino.
It's one of the best short safaris for a real shot at all of the Big Five. Tarangire adds elephant, lion and (with luck) leopard, while the Ngorongoro floor is the top place in northern Tanzania for buffalo and the endangered black rhino in one drive. Sightings are never guaranteed with wild animals, but the odds here are excellent.
You fly from Zanzibar to Arusha — roughly an hour and a quarter in the air, landing mid-morning — then travel by road to the parks (Arusha to Tarangire is about two hours). The safari ends near the crater, so you return by road to Arusha for the afternoon flight back to Zanzibar. Your guide handles every transfer.
You spend the night at a comfortable lodge in the highlands near the Ngorongoro Crater (the Karatu area), on a full-board basis — lunch and dinner on day one, breakfast and lunch on day two. Let Mosum know of any dietary needs at booking and they'll be arranged with the lodge in advance.
The rate covers return flights between Zanzibar and Arusha, one night's accommodation, all meals, every game drive in a 4x4, all Tarangire park fees and Ngorongoro crater fees, a professional driver-guide, and transfers. Personal spending, drinks, tips and travel insurance are not included.
Tarangire and Ngorongoro sit closer to Arusha than the Serengeti, so the flights are shorter and you reach the parks the same morning — ideal when time is tight. You trade the Serengeti's endless plains and the Great Migration for Tarangire's elephants and the crater's Big Five density. For the migration and big-cat plains, look at the Serengeti fly-in safaris instead.
No. Zanzibar and the mainland are both part of Tanzania, so if you're already on the island you do not need a separate visa for Tarangire or Ngorongoro. International travellers should just make sure their existing Tanzania visa is valid for the dates of the trip.
The Zanzibar–Arusha legs are flown on light aircraft with lovely views of the Indian Ocean and Mount Meru. Baggage is limited — typically around 15 kg of soft-sided luggage per person, no hard cases — so pack light for the one night and confirm exact allowances at booking.
Yes — the elephants of Tarangire and the crater's dense wildlife make it a great family safari for children roughly aged six and up. There is a fair amount of driving between Arusha and the parks, so it suits kids who travel well. Some lodges have minimum-age policies, so contact Mosum for family arrangements before booking.
Keep it light and soft-sided for the aircraft, and pack for cool highlands:
  • Light, breathable clothing in neutral tones (khaki, beige, olive)
  • Warm layers — the Ngorongoro rim gets genuinely cold, morning and evening
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Camera with a zoom lens, plus binoculars
  • Toiletries for one night, personal medications and a valid photo ID
Guest safety always comes first. If severe weather affects the domestic flights, Mosum will let you know as early as possible and work to adjust or rebook your safari. Confirm the current cancellation and rebooking terms at the time of booking, and allow a buffer before any international departure from Zanzibar.
June to October (dry season) is the standout window, when Tarangire's elephants and plains game gather at the river. The crater delivers year-round thanks to its enclosed ecosystem. November–February is green and good, while the long rains of March–May are quietest — Tarangire's wildlife disperses and flights are most likely to be affected.
