Short answer: Mnemba Atoll has the healthiest reef, Menai Bay is the best all-day experience, and the Blue Lagoon is the easiest for beginners and families.
Snorkeling in Zanzibar is excellent, but the best spot depends on whether you want coral, calm water, a full day out or something simple. Here is how the main areas compare.
Mnemba Atoll (north-east)
A protected marine conservation area with clear water, turtles and plentiful reef fish. It is the best place for coral and the choice of most keen snorkelers. See our Mnemba snorkeling trip.
Menai Bay (south-west)
The largest protected marine area in Zanzibar, explored on a traditional dhow. Safari Blue combines reef snorkeling with a sandbank and a seafood lunch, which makes it the best choice for a full day.
The Blue Lagoon (Michamvi peninsula)
Shallow, bright water with starfish on the sand. It suits beginners and children, and a trip takes only half a day. See the Blue Lagoon tour.
Kizimkazi and Pungume (south)
The south coast is known for dolphins and quiet sandbanks. The Pungume Island tour adds snorkeling and a barbecue on an uninhabited island.
Nakupenda and Prison Island (near Stone Town)
Easy to reach from town and good for a short boat trip. Snorkeling is lighter here, but the sandbank is beautiful. See the Nakupenda sandbank and Prison Island trips.
Tips for a better snorkel
- Go in the morning, when the sea is calmer and visibility is better.
- Aim for June to October or December to February for the clearest water.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen and never stand on the coral.
- Tell your guide if you are a weak swimmer; life jackets are easy to arrange.
