The Best Tours and Excursions in Zanzibar: Our Picks by Interest

Short answer: choose one sea day, one culture day and one nature day, and leave room to rest. Safari Blue, Stone Town with a spice farm and Jozani Forest cover the island well in three outings.

Zanzibar has more tours than most visitors have days. The easiest way to choose is by what you enjoy, not by what is most popular. Below is how we usually advise guests at our office on Forodhani Street, grouped by interest, with links to the full details.

If you want to be on the water

A sea day is the signature Zanzibar experience. Safari Blue is the full-day dhow trip with snorkeling and a beach lunch. Mnemba Island snorkeling is shorter and focuses on the reef. For something quieter, the Nakupenda sandbank is a white strip of sand reached from Stone Town, and the sunset dhow cruise is a calm way to end a day.

If you like history and culture

Start with the Stone Town walking tour, a UNESCO World Heritage old town of carved doors and narrow lanes. Add the Prison Island boat trip to meet the giant tortoises, or a village tour to see how coastal communities live.

If you prefer nature and food

The spice farm tour shows where Zanzibar’s cloves, vanilla and cinnamon grow, and you can taste as you walk. Jozani Forest is the home of the red colobus monkey, found only in Zanzibar.

If you want wildlife on the mainland

A safari from Zanzibar takes you by light aircraft to Mikumi or Selous in a single day, or to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro over a few nights.

How to combine them

  • Short stay (3 days): one sea day and one Stone Town day.
  • Standard stay (5 to 7 days): add Jozani and the spice farm, plus a rest day.
  • Longer stay: add a safari and a sunset cruise.

If you would rather not plan it yourself, our holiday packages combine the best days with airport transfers and lunches.
