Short answer: Safari Blue is a full-day dhow trip in Menai Bay with snorkeling, a sandbank, a mangrove lagoon swim and a grilled lunch. It suits most travellers, including families and non-swimmers.
Safari Blue is the best-known boat day in Zanzibar. If you are deciding whether to book it, this is how the day usually runs.
The route
You leave Fumba, on the south-west coast, and sail into the Menai Bay Conservation Area. The day moves between reef stops, a sandbank and a mangrove lagoon, then returns to Fumba in the afternoon.
The activities
- Snorkeling over the reef with gear and a guide.
- A walk and swim at a sandbank that appears in the middle of the bay.
- A swim in a sheltered mangrove lagoon.
- Sailing on a wooden dhow, which is the quiet part of the day.
The lunch
Lunch is grilled on the beach with seafood, chicken or vegetarian options, plus tropical fruit and soft drinks. Mention allergies when you book.
Who it suits
Almost everyone: couples, families, groups of friends and solo travellers. Non-swimmers can use a life jacket or stay on board. If you get seasick easily, take a tablet and sit near the centre of the boat.
Shared or private?
A shared boat is more social and lower in price. A private boat gives you control over pace and company. See the Safari Blue tour page for details and prices.
What to bring
Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and a waterproof phone case. For a full packing list, read what to bring on a boat trip.
