Dolphins surfacing near a boat at Kizimkazi, Zanzibar

Dolphins in Zanzibar: Where to See Them and How to Do It Kindly

Short answer: yes, most often at Kizimkazi on the south coast, early in the morning. Sightings are common but never guaranteed, and responsible boats keep their distance.

Wild dolphins live in the waters around Zanzibar, and watching them is one of the island’s most memorable experiences. The way you do it matters for the animals and for your trip.

Where to see them

Kizimkazi, at the southern tip, is the best-known area. Pods are often seen within a short boat ride from the village. Dolphins are also occasionally seen near Mnemba and on boat trips elsewhere, but not reliably.

When to go

Early morning is best. The sea is usually calm, the animals are active and fewer boats are out. Our dolphin tour leaves early for this reason.

Is it ethical?

It can be, if the operators follow rules. Look for boats that stay at a respectful distance, limit the number of boats around a pod, avoid chasing and never force you into the water. Be wary of any trip that promises a guaranteed swim.

If you do get in the water

  • Enter quietly and do not reach for the animals.
  • Keep your group small and stay together.
  • If the dolphins swim away, let them go.

Other sea trips with a chance of dolphins

The Pungume Island tour crosses dolphin waters, and the Safari Blue bay is also visited by them now and then.
